PROTOTRAK MACHINIST

 

Job Summary:

​

The Prototrak Machinist in a plastic manufacturing setting is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating Prototrak CNC/manual milling machines and lathes to create custom plastic parts and components. This role requires a strong understanding of machining processes for various plastic materials, ensuring precision and quality in every production run.

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Program and operate Prototrak milling machines and lathes to produce plastic components according to technical drawings and job specifications.

• Select appropriate tooling and machine settings to efficiently machine plastic parts, considering the unique properties of different plastic materials.

• Conduct first-piece inspections and monitor production to ensure compliance with specifications, quality standards, and tolerances.

• Adjust feeds, speeds, and tooling based on plastic material properties (e.g., acrylic, PVC, polycarbonate) to achieve optimal surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

• Perform preventive maintenance on Prototrak machines, including cleaning and lubricating equipment to ensure peak performance.

• Maintain precise records of production runs, tooling changes, and machine maintenance activities.

• Work closely with production and engineering teams to troubleshoot issues and improve machining processes for plastic materials.

• Follow safety protocols to prevent machine and material damage, especially when working with materials that may react to heat, stress, or specific cutting tools.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required; vocational training or certification in CNC machining or plastics manufacturing is a plus.

• Minimum 2 years of experience operating Prototrak machines or similar CNC/manual equipment, specifically with plastic materials.

• Strong understanding of plastic machining properties, tooling choices, and feed/speed adjustments needed for different plastics.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and CAD files specific to plastic component design.

• Skilled in using measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) and knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) as it applies to plastic parts.

• Familiarity with quality control processes, including SPC (Statistical Process Control) for maintaining part quality in a manufacturing environment.

• Basic knowledge of machine shop safety and a commitment to maintaining a safe work area.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, handle and move raw plastic materials, and stand for extended periods.

• Capable of handling heat-sensitive materials and maintaining an organized workspace in a production environment.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with other CNC machines and programs, with an understanding of their specific adjustments for plastic materials.

• Knowledge of plastic manufacturing standards and common industry practices.

• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail to ensure high-quality parts, minimizing waste and rework.

CNC MILL OR LATHE MACHINISTS - ALL SHIFTS

 

Job Description

• Applicants MUST have a minimum of 5 years CNC experience operating and/or setting up Mills or Lathes

• Ability to read mechanical drawings is REQUIRED

• Includes 2, 3 and 5 axis machining

• CNC programming ability is a PLUS

• Must be able to follow direction and work independently, as well as, part of a team

• Other duties as assigned, including deburring and cleaning parts

• 1st and 2nd Shift Openings Available
